I have the tranny out and was wondering how hard it would be to replace? It looks like there are 6 bolts that hold the piece to the transmission. Is all I have to do is remove those and replace the seal, or should I leave for someone who knows?

I'll leave to pro to do it,because you want reseal the transmission not just front pump,(side seal,B1,B2....rear cover seal......)some seal do need special tool. how many miles??? why just rebuilt it.

The transmission works perfect (except for the leak). I bought it used and apparently it had been rebuilt. There is no way to know this for sure, but I understand that automatics can be a nightmare to rebuild if they are not done properly. I would like to leave it as it works very well, but would like to know how hard it is to replace this seal.

The original question is hard to answer. The easiest answer would be to say that we charge 6 hours labor to R&R a tranny and 3 to reaseal the front pump and external housings.

The pump is bolted from the back side of the forward housing, which requires disassembly. If you are scared that rebuilding is risky then you should be scared to do this work. Other than the valve body the mechanicals inside the tranny start where you are at. It doesn't get much harder to replace the Reverse clutch at that point and then the next and the next etc.

If the tranny has been rebuilt within a noticable time then I would worry that the front pump bushing is worn. It would be wise to have an experienced eye to look at the problem.
