How long does an ignition tumbler last?
What's the life expectancy of an ignition tumbler? I changed it about 100,000 miles ago and its starting to act up. I know an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure for these so I'll look into changing it soon (hopefully soon enough) but I've been lubing it regularly and I'm disappointed it didn't last longer.
Fortunately they just put in a new dealer nearby, I didn't have that luxury with my Peugeots. I'll have to bring my drool bucket is case they have an SLR

More data needed
Did you replace the steering lock at the same time?
FYI. For longest durability, you need to replace the steering lock at the same time. |

Ignition Lock replacement
My ihnition is sticking at 110-120 thousand miles too. I have been setting shifter in neutral and then the key turns and then I can start the car. Does this sound like I need a lock or lock and tumbler? I was thinking it had something to do with my fuel mix and idle problems. Maybe its just part of the laundry list of items that will need replacement at this time. I wonder if I can get an ignition lock at a good pick a part place. Maybe from a low miles wrecked car.

Original at 170k. I am very vigilant about keeping the pressure off the lock. If the steering wheel is not in the lock position I turn the car on and then turn the wheel to the desired position before turning the car off and locking.

the newer style keys like are in the 126 and i believe 124 only last 100 to 150k in my experience.
like many things, the 123 style old fashoned cut keys seem to last about twice as long or longer. tom w

I thought it was a function on how many lbs of other keys handing on the chain.

After about 1975, Ignition lock durability was not one of MBs shining achievements.

I just picked my car up from my (new) independant this morning. i would really tell anyone who hasn't changed theirs after 100000 now is a good time. better safe than sorry for the cost of parts. My 94 c280 tumbler froze and I could not turn the key (even using something to try to vibrate the tumblers free). My mechanic had a lot of extra work to extract the key/tumbler. after the 51 dollar towing bill for a 4 mile tow the, parts and labor came out to 508.06 . I'll bet if i check just the parts alone (it sounds like something I could have done myself if I could have gotten the key to the "1" position the cost would have been under 100.
(just for good measure, I am going to check how much the parts are from the stealer to see how bad the independant got me. my change to another inde! maybe someone here knows how much the parts should be... tumbler was 107 steering lock was 99 and lock cover was 15. labor was 264.
