Does anyone own a MB shop??

Hi there,

I live in Canada, and my w124/300E has had the classic ignition tumbler issue. I was able to get it to the number 1 position and get it to my dad's shop.

However, he called MB here and they said that they would not sell me the part and it had to be done by MB. They want to sell me the part for $400, plus therepair at MB!!!

What a bunch of bull****...

Is there anyone out there that can get my a tumbler if I supply you with the VIN?

In looking on here, the tumbler is supposed to be $50 and doesn't need to be done at a MB dealership.

Cheers
Aaron

I can tell you that in the USA they are strict on selling the part to you in person. Mine went bad out of state. I made it back home, but they would not mail me the part. I had to go and pick it up in person.

It is nowhere near any $400 and installation (I had the dealer do mine) was less than $50.00. Of course you are talking Canadian Dollars.

I would call MB of Canada and ask them their policy.

Ya, I called another dealership and they said that they would sell it to me, but the tumbler was $180 CDN.

Even with exchange, that still doesn't make sense... USD to CDN is not 3x!

Hope I can find someone here that can help me resource one without the rip-off factor.

Oh also forgot to mention that they said it would take two weeks to get here, not the two days that people speak off on this forum in the US. Sometimes being in Canada sucks!

Anyways, if someone can help me in my bind to get a tumbler for a reasonable price and within a normal timeline, it would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers
Aaron

I happen to be in the market for my second one so I know the routine. Fortunately they built a MB dealer close to me since the last one was replaced.

One thing I remember that you might like to know is that if you take the tumbler out you can start it with a screw driver, in case you HAVE to drive it.

Poco is very close to me since I'm in Vancouver!

Thanks!

I actually repaired my tumbler.

What's happening is that the brass parts (don't know the name) that contact the key wear down. So the key doesn't retract them all the way.

Once it was removed from the car, I had to remove the roll pin that holds the tumbler inside the casing. Then with the key in the tumbler, grind the brass parts down flush with the casing interior. Lubricate it, put it back together with a new roll pin, and you're done. Mine has been working for over 2 years.

And as indicated earlier, you can still operate the car without the tumbler installed. The key works as does a small screwdriver.

Good luck.
