How do I get cruise control amp out- 87 300E?
 

I think the cc amp is under the dash and just above the pedals. There is a black plastic shield with a plastic screw at the bottom. I removed the screw but the shield is in tight. There seem to be black clips on top but I do not want to force it. Is there a trick? I did not see pictures when searching. Thanks.

I can't say for certain on the W124, but on the W126 the screws you can see are only half of the story. To remove the underdash panel you will have to look at the coin trays. There should be a couple fill panels, remove the fill panels and you should find the other half of the retaining screws. Should be two on the right and one on the left IIRC. Suspect the 124 will be similar. Once the underdash is out you should be able to access the CC amp provided you are flexible enough to contort.

Pull carpet and remove the two plastic nuts that hold the panel down at the bottom. Remove the screws at the top of the bottom panel and it will pull free.

Check for screws under the ignition lock cover (that one just pulls out) and under the trim panel around the headlight switch. (pull knob and unscrew 24mm nut -- a 1" socket works). I seem to remember some screws holding the panel in place, and I know I had to take the ones under the covers noted when I removed the dash, but I don't remember if they hold the dash on or the underdash panel. The panel may just slide into the clips, I'll have to check.

Have fun. MB obviously mistakenly figured their cruise control would be a trouble free item. HA HA HA They couldn't have put that amp in a crappier place.
