Greetings everyone. First I would like to say what an incredible site this is. Wow. My wife and I recently bought our first MB. It's an '88 190E. Base model, black with tan pleather. Pretty cool though. These cars really do ride much nicer than anything the U.S. makes. Ok, enough. We bought a car we could afford, not exactly what we would have liked so there are various problems. I will start with this one: Both of the rear windows will not go up or down. There doesn't seem to be any power to them. There is power to the switch at the center console but not the back switch. I checked with a voltmeter. Where does the wiring go or is there some relay that I should check before I really tear into this? The switches in the center console are a double switch. One for the front and one for the back. If I unplug the rear window connector the switch lights up. When I plug it in the light goes out. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Kyle

It sounds like you have the child lock of the rear power windows activated. It is a small left/right button between the front and rear left window switch on the front center console...
When the child lock is activated, the illumination in the switch in the rear will go out and power will be shut off.
Can you control the rear power windows with the buttons in the front?

greetingz,

MBenz, thanks for the reply. No, I can't control the windows at all. The switches on the doors have no power. The switches in the center console have power but the windows will not go up or down from either control. When working on the center console switch, if I unplug the rear window connector, the lights on both switches illuminate. I have tried hitting the child safety button many times. What if the connector for that was on backwards though? I will have to check that. I just seems odd that 2 of anything would crap out at the same time? Any other suggestions?

This may be obvoius, but have you checked that fuses are OK and with correct ampere? The switches may be faulty also. Changed places on the switches and see if that helps. Regards /Patrik

thanks for the input.
Actually, I believe that the the front left and right rear are on the same circut as well as the front right and the left rear being on the same. Therefore, since the fronts work, it can't be a fuse. I did check them both. Unfortunately you cant switch the front and back switches cause the pins are not in the same locations. I could try switching the whole left and right but since I am having the same problem in both sides I doubt that will help. I will however try it. I am open to anything right now. Thanks again for taking the time to respond. It is appreciated greatly.
Kyle

The older models did have right and left separated fused systems, the newer models have a front and rear fuse separation...If you have power in the connector (check it with a test light), you can try controlling your rear windows by connecting the powered pin to the wire that goes to the window motor (I think that the 190 has the changeable power/ground system to run the windows up and down). There is a brown ground wire and a gray/blue illumination wire in the connector; don't shortcut the power to these. If I remember correctly, the wires to the motor are something with black (first wire) and green (second wire)...
Bypass the switch and shortcut the power to the windows...

Thanks for all the responses. I got sidetracked doing a head replacement and heatercore job. Now back to the smaller issues. Anyone else have any suggestions? Benzmach, I will try doing that. I was hoping someone had a similar experience and would be able to offer other suggestions.
Thanks in advance,

Kyle

I had a similar situation where the electrical wires between the door and the T frame were broken. Check the continuity between the console switch and the window switch/motor OR, may be somebody already tried to do this and reconnected the wires wrong!!!
Oh! Did you try closing the door with the switch press on the down position? WARNING: don't try this if you are outside. :^)
Good luck!

Thought this was worth following up for someone else having a similar problem. J.HIDALGO was right, the wires were severed in the door column. The fact that when I got the car the door checks were broken should have been indicative of the problem but live and learn. So anyway, I have one side fixed and the other will follow soon.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Kodiak.

On my 87 300D, both rear windows are non-functional from the rear switches. On the driver's side, the power window will not go up or down and is getting power. It will not respond to either the drivers switch or the rear switch. I know it has power because I can hear it "click" inside the door. Now, the right rear power window works just fine from the console switch, but doesnn't work with the rear-door switch! Any thoughts? Also, the driver's side switch illuminates at night while the other one doesn't. What an odd problem that I really want to track down.

Thanks.
