harmonic balancer or blown engine?
did i throw a rod or is that horrible noise the harmonic balancer
|
Look for metal shavings below the harmonic balancer. If there are shavings, then it is probably the HB, if not.... :(

where to look?

I forgot to ask, please tell us all the year, model, and mileage of your car for futher help!

1992 e300 3.0 l6 i did have a vibration for a while that i thought was a motor mount .
|
????
Didn't know the I6 had a harmonic balancer.
|
Well the first thing that popped in my head when I read harmonic balancer was the E320 (V6 version)
Maybe someone else will have some good suggestions on where to start looking. |
The I6's have no need for a harmonic balancer, so your engine does not have one.
Can you describe the noise and where it's coming from? Record it and post here if possible. |
One of the all time worst questions - car has neither a rod nor a harmonic balancer. Suggest starting over, with more information, and perhaps a name change.
|
Not to divert the topic or anythig, but the harmonic balancer recalls were specific to the later V-6 configurations. The I-6s (as previously posted don't have them (or need them).
Describe the noise and when it's occurring...does the noise occur on idle and disappear when you rev? I ask this because a worn shock bushing on the belt tensioner can make a clanking noise at idle that sounds like a rod about to go south! |

i think that you had better check the fan bearing bracket.grab hold of the fan blade and see if you have movement back and forth.suggest replace the fan blade at same time if this is problem.i am fixing same prob on same year car this morning.david poole european performance dallas tx.
