I'm installing a replacement instrument cluster(with electronic speedometer/odometer) from a parts car but it has more than 20,000 less miles on the odometer than my car. I've got it hooked up to a function generator at 1800 Hz which has the speedo at 160 MPH. At this rate, it will take over five days nonstop to add 20,000 miles! Is there a faster way? If I increase the frequency will I burn out the speedo motor? On the other hand, if I let it run nonstop for five days at 160 MPH won't that burn out the speedo motor? Should I maybe let it rest every 12 hours for an hour or so? I understand that new replacement odometers can be set to any mileage by pressing the trip odometer reset button in a certain sequence, but isn't that only a one time thing?

Frequency generator is the ONLY way to change mileage on USED inst cluster. NEW ones can se set but once & that is by MB only!!

Don't know who has it but look at these sites for your answer. We repair speedos and have been waiting for the market to justify these tools.

Frequency generator set to 160 mph ?? What fun is that ? I say put the dash back together, fill up with fuel, get out on the hiway and DRIVE that baby at 160 mph for 5 days to get your mileage up there. Way more fun.
Just kidding. But it would be more fun. |
Trent - My thoughts exactly
But then it wouldn't be accurate to the vehicles mileage.
|
I say we all discuss how to TAKE OFF 20,000 miles from our VDO's QUICKLY!!!
|
You could really go in reverse on an old mercedes and it would roll back the odometer? Yeah, the new ones must be a *****. Oh well, I guess it's better that way though, in fact, I KNOW.
|
On the new digital odometers, it actually adds mileage in reverse I think.
|
Yes, in reverse. It also adds miles when the car is off!! I once tried to coast down a hill after turning the car off, and it still added the miles!! .2 miles it added when I turned the car off for about 15 seconds!! That's not even fair? The engine isn't even running.

I know, I swear Mercedes-Benz manuals are practically common sense manuals.
(Though I did once stick my torso out of a Mercedes while driving it [cruise control].... I guess I had no common sense when I was 16!!) |

MegaChip
The MegaChip site is a gas! The unit 'reprograms' the digital speedometer from the **38pin diag connector** without removing or touching anything!

I wondered if anyone actually would go to the sites. We will probably purchased such tooling in the next year or two. There always seems something more important (and expensive) in the way; currently it is the MB scanner SDS at over $20k.
While MBs scanner will allow one time mileage changes to a new unit, BMWs will have to have their instrument cluster sent to the factory to reset a new speedo to old mileage. The use of used speedos is even more interesting in that on some models the chassis number is also encripted into the chip. |
