Today, my '92 400E was running fine (115 mph on an open stretch of interstate). Later, when I pulled into the garage and started to put it into park, it stalled. I re-started it and backed out of the driveway to see what the problem was. It did idle a bit erratic which it has never done before. I drove down the street and when decelerating to turn around it surged a bit and then resumed normal driving. Finally, all dash lights went on and it stalled. I put it in park and restarted it again - no problem. When pulling into the garage a second time, it surged just as I was entering the garage. About an hour later, I drove it a few miles with no problems. Does anyone know what this could be? It has never done anything like this before.

From the description of your symptoms, it sounds as though it may be fuel related. Start simple and replace your fuel filters. How many miles are on the car? Has the timing chain and associated elements been replaced on schedule?

The car has 72K. I am not sure if the timing chain has ever been replaced. Two weeks ago, my mechanic had to take the fuel tank out of the trunk to replace a pinhole leak in the tank. It required him to take off all associated hoses, etc. to get the tank out. He did not change the fuel filters. Anymore guesses?

Sounds like a story from the X Files. Did you notice any bright lights or other signs of nearby UFOs?

Smiles.
