wont go into reverse or park unless...
 

Hello.. I have posted this question in DD as well, but here goes..

My wife's '85 300D shifter will not go from neutral into reverse or park with the engine running. Turn the engine off, and everything functions properly, the shifter passing from drive through neutral into reverse and into park. But not with the engine running... Any thoughts? thanks... Frank

The transmission has a stuck governor or the two governor filters in the secondary valve body are plug. Do a search under my name for more information.

c32amg.. I did a search under your name but unsure what I'm looking for in all your posts..You sure have been informative to so many people..does this mean a rebuild?.. does the govenor act as a reverse gear lockout safety?.. thanks Frank

A plunger locks out reverse and park when the car is moving, both can be removed with the transmission in the car. The valve body and plate must be removed to access the governor filters. Do you have any driverability problems with the transmission.
