Smog pump on 1991 420sel

My smog pump rattles for about 1-2 min after start-up. Does this mean it's gone bad? Even if it has, is it worth replacing. I thought the smog pump only worked on car start-up.

I would disconnect the wire that engages the clutch. These things are only used to geet the cat up to temp faster. Expensive to replace and not really needed.

?Really? Not much to ship to Tucson, I don't think. I'm a little compulsive, and having a properly functioning one satisfies me (even if it's an unnecessary functioning one, whatever it is). What is the opinion regarding why it rattles on activation? Bad bearing?

221K as shown on the odometer. The clutch on it spins free.

It is normal for them to make a slight annoying noise during operation.

Would you define a "slight annoying noise" as a rattle for 1-2 min?

If it's only discernable, that is correct. I wouldn't disconnect it for a slightly annoying noise. It is doing its job to help us all breathe better. At least with clean air, we can live a more comfortable life while we slowly die from all the hormones and chemicals they put in our food.

Good point. What fraction of potential pollution is eliminated by the function of the smog pump?

You and 10,000 others doing the same thing could make a difference.
