Changing A/C Compressor Clutch

Hi,

Can someone here please tell me how to change the clutch on my a/c compressor of my 1980 450 SL.
I rented a clutch puller, but I cannot find any info on this subject in any book that I have looked in, or on a google search.
I need a guide before I start so I can do an R&R.

Thanks
Jack

I'm not answering the question but where did you find a clutch only? I thought it was a dealer only item that cost more than a new compressor with clutch.

If you can find another car that has same compressor model number or yours maybe you can find instructions. I think removing clutch is pretty generic. Remove bolt on end, use impact so no counterhold is necessary, remove snap ring. When reinstalling I use a strap wrench to counterhold. Torque for bolt is probably 16 nm and gap of clutch is .5mm

These directions apply to a Denso compressor, don't know what you have.

Hi,

Thanks for the tips.
I hope that it is as simple as you make it sound.
But we all know that nothing is simple on thses cars

Many things on these cars are simple.

Clutch replacement tools (for the r4 compressor anyway) are available as part of the AutoZone tool loaner program.

1980 450SL has a delco harrison A6 compressor possible to replace clutch on the motor.... if you are real real good, with exactly the tools designed for use in tight spaces.

New A6 compressors are so cheap we haven't replaced a clutch in 15 years.

Hi,

There is no room to pull the clutch off while mounted.
If I have to remove the radiator & shroud I might as well get a new compressor as you said.

Thanks
Jack

Is the clutch bad? If it does't always work you might want to check the air gap. I just made a clutch repair to my Ford. The air gap had increased to .048and it needs to be .015. It was a easy repair on the Ford. Remove the face plate and remove shims as needed. No tool required just a flat stock across the face to loosen the center bolt.
