1987 560 SEL trailer hitch

Hi folks,
I need a trailer hitch for my 1987 560 SEL-it's a light trailer about the approximate weight of a small boat trailer that is now hauling and ultralight airplane.

I don't recall ever seeing a 560 towing anything but from the post here it does appear there are trailer hitches made for that body style.

Thanks for the help
Bobby Miles

I don't think you'd find anything in the US specific for a 126 chassis, but could do a search on the web. You might inquire at UHaul or some such place that specializes in hitches. I know I've seen 126's towing so it can be done. Might need to drill holes and put in a few reinforcements to do it, unless someone can make you something really custom.

Brink makes nice hitches in Europe but I have not found a source in North America. They are decent looking compared to the crewd ones I have seen here and you don't have to butcher the car to install them. Not sure if the ball is right size for N. America. A friend has one on his 124 wagon so I'm going to ask where he got it - I would like to get one for my 124 sedan. He might have bought it in Europe.

I have a light duty hitch for a 126. Actually, I have two, but I'm putting one on the SD. It bolts to the bumper and the trunk pan. I haven't installed either, but it looks easy enough. Drill four holes, bolt it on, and splice in a wiring connector.

The newer one I have (the one I'm keeping) says 200 pound tongue, 2000 load. The one I would sell does not have the ball or the part the ball bolts on to (looks about a 1.25" x 1.25" square tube). It also does not have the fasteners. As a note, the part that bolts to the trunk pan will need to have some thin backing plates made for inside the trunk.

Once this is installed, if you get rear ended, the bumper shocks will do nothing. I think the trunk pan would get bent up depending on how hard the hit would be.

Would you want it? Sixty bucks shipped.

You need to buy the part the ball bolts to. It slides into the square hole, with a hitch pin holding it in. You can buy them at WalMart for something like 20 bucks.

In my original post above, I stated the part that the ball bolts to was not included, nor the ball.

There are two sizes, one is about 2"x2", and the one for this hitch, which is about 1.25" x 1.25".

not flaming

just need a larger receiver for my own piece of mind while pulling my plane down the road - I should have asked more questions. Nothing I`ve see so far looks like its a good fit for my 87 560.

It is rated at 2000 pounds with a 200 pound tongue weight. I do not think you'll find anything bigger than that. Any heavier hitch bolts to a frame; there really is no frame on the back of a 126.

Reconsidered

Here is the print out for the installation instructions from etrailers. It is exactly what I bought from you and will be helpful with the installation.

Simply put I've never seen anything less than a 2 inch receiver except on a motorcycle or something of that size.

In light of the new information maybe it's not too small, however I'm sure I'm going to go weigh the trailer now and make sure of my numbers.

I'll post a picture of my installation progress and thanks for getting me receiver -- UPS delivered to the door.

I guess a person could go to etrailers.com and download their own diagram and instructions for installation

Thanks again Fred
