is it the cable or tabs? - possibly the tracks need grease? she said it wont move but 2"- but it still moves, which I think is good- for now. is the solution an easy fix or a grossly complicated money burning project? opinions and advice please- tried search but no luck with this issue  |

immediate and serious help required- sunroof stuck open- sounds like grinding-osheeet
1984 300D Turbo
Roof slides forward 1"- grinds on the Driver side-(is the motor in the trunk?) can feel it in the sheet metal. possibly a gear stripped- but I cant even slide it-it is firmly stuck open. I looked in there with a flashlight- could not see anything different between the 2 sides- track is clean/unbent- nothing seemed to be impeding the slider. This thing worked fine yesterday. Now I cant even get the roof closed enough to drop the liner to see WTF is going on. I am so screwed. :behead: I need to do is get it closed so I can go away this weekend without fear of a soaking wet interior. any and all help is immensely appreciated. |
brute force works
so I tore off the linre and it stayed in one piece.
I yanked really hard on the sunroof and pressed the close switch at the same time. It felt like some of the time it was engaging and some time it was not. It mostly sounded like it was grinding. The housing cable made a really loud popping sound and jerked forward when the roof was nearly closed-seemed quite unnatural to me. I will adress this issue come springtime- I believe it is a gear/cable, but i will prolly rebuild the entire assembly. Sorry for the overreaction-low blood sugar does that to me. |
If you read the owners manual you will find a helpful hint on sunroof operation.

Manually Closing the Sunroof
On the inside wall of the rear quarter panel at the drivers side, you will find the sunroof motor - using the correct sized socket ( its either a 17 or 24mm size ) you can manually close, or open the sunroof. |
