feasibility question: gas-to-diesel engine swap

hello.
i have a nice 1987 420 sel w/ high mileage that seems to be worth too little to sell; i have an opportunity to buy an 1985 300sd w/ 200k miles and a bad trans for cheap and was wondering what it would take to swap the diesel into the sel body-i'm guessing i would still need a trans but i always wanted a long wheel base diesel! thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Peace,
gregg

it would be a lot less trouble to replace the tranny and then you would have two cars.

the gassers are pretty reliable too and dont use all that much more fuel.

And check with your DMV before you start with such a project, if you intend to drive the result on the street.

You don't say where you are, but here in IL, the receiver car would have to be 25 years old and would require a new title. Thus, it would have to be an '81 or earlier.

thanks to all.
i have too many cars as it is but a lwb diesel is something i crave.
i am surprised that the 420 isn't wort more than a grand.
good tip on the mvd issues; probably worse here in pa.
regards,
gregg

Cabbies did it a lot in the UK

There was a cab company right by my house which made 300SDL's from 450SEL's as W116 diesels were not available outside the US.
