Thanks for all the info so far. My '91 190e 2.6 (120,000) which has been running perfectly until it suddenly just shut down on the hiway (No cough, sputter, or hichup). Trying to restart (hot or cold) gives some promises and occasionally 5-10 seconds of smooth running before a sudden shutdown. I replaced the OVP relay and nothing changed. The '91 does not have a fuel pump relay (fuel pump is now controled by the KE unit--I think). I am now going to check the dist. cap and rotor as well as the fuel pressure. Am I going about this the right way??? Does anyone have another suggestion before I get REALLY dirty. Thanks in advance.

How about your ignition switch? I recall some threads in the forum mentioned that also. Do a search to see if you come up with something. Good luck.

Had a similar problem with my 87 190E 2.3 a while back. Problem was traced to plugged catalytic converter caused by harden stem seal leaking motor oil. Too much back pressure I guess. Just my 2 cents.

Just got it to run for a while
Finally started after cranking for a while. Ran very rough, like not all the plugs were firing. It was also blowing back through the air intake some. There was not any smoke. Ran like that for five or six minutes and then abruptly stopped again. There were no smells of gas or rotten egg. I am not getting any warning lights. Any further ideas?

Sounds like an ignition failure instead of fuel system. Cap, rotor, wires, coil can cause this. Is there spark to the plugs?
The fuel pump gets power from MAS relay on 1990-93 cars.

"Welcome my son, welcome to the machine, where have you been? its alright we know where you've been," (PINK FLOYD, Wish You Were Here). But really now we willget your problem solved here. My suggestion is to check you ignition wiring and coil. Coils go bad (they are put thru the test on MB high energry ignitions. Wiring problems such as high resistance if the primary ignition wiring car make for hard starts as intermittant staliing. I had the problemon My 85 Mustang GT (restistance in the primary wiring. Hope this helps and WELCOME to MERCEDES SHOP.

Thanks JDUB
Understand the Karma....and appreciate it. Where have I been?......spent time with an Austin Healey 3000, an Alfa GTV, a Porsche 914, a BMW 320i, Audi 5000 Turbo, Volvo turbo, and a Saab Turbo convertable......but I have finally found MB. So now I am 50 something and I have a "baby Benz".....and I feel like I wasted so much time. I will try your suggestions......and get this girl back in action. Thanks for your responce.

Found the problem.....think
Took off the distributor cap and the rotor fell out!!!!!! It seems the rotor mount that is attached to the cam had broken. This is a cast metal part and I can't imagine how it broke. I have ordered the part as well as a new cap and rotor. Hope this takes care of the problem. It appears that MBDOC was right on his diagnosis of an ignition problem

We see this often. The new rotor stand will be made of steel.
Good luck.
