While driving me 1989 300E (Federal) to work today I noticed the fuel gauge doing some kind of tango. This happens when I come to a full stop and when I accelerate it appear's to be fine. Twice when I was at full stop, the gauge danced a bit then bottomed out to Zero! I also noticed my oil gauge doing some kind of Limbo dance also. I've replaced the brushes about a year ago in the alternater, have a 3 month old battery. Is there somewhere else I should be looking to get the dance machine to leave my car alone?

I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions!

It is the fuel level sending unit. My 85 380SE does the same thing from about 1/2 tank all the way down. The contact for the low fuel lamp is completely seperate from the level sensor and it is reliable.

I have a '88 190E that has an erratic fuel gauge. It rarely works. If you smack the top of the dash it generally will move around quite a bit, I don't know when to trust it though. I would assume this is probably a loose ground in the gauge? The gauge wouldn't move if it was the sending unit would it?

If you have more than one guage doing a dance you better check connections and grounds
