I have an 87 190E 2.3 which is giving me transmission troubles. When driving it shifts fine but when it gets into fourth gear it stops accelerating then the engine starts to wind up but it doesn't go anywhere. It seems that it is slipping..but only in the last gear. Any Ideas? The fluid is Ok and no leaks or other problems. I ended up dropping it into third and driving it home that way..just a little slower. Thanks in advance!!

Transmission troubles

Well I crawled under there today and found a couple things. The bolt which holds the cable to the transmission was a little loose. Also the bushing for the gear selector knob was broken up and partially missing. Anyone else have this problem? I am not sure if this is the cause but it seems it could be part of it...

Charles, hate to say this but this type of problem is usualy related to the 4th gear clutch(k-2) pack wearing out. There a 2 teflon seals where the fluid is supplied to this clutch pack & they fail sometimes. There is an accumulator in the valve body that can fail & cause this problem also. There is a service bulletin on this subject. I WOULD always try to service the trans first & get a MB trans tech to drive car!!

Update..I have pulled the transmission and found that the K-2 clutch plates are a little worn. The metal plates appear to have gotten hot and have some slight burn marks. Should these be replaced as well? I was expecting to see the clutch plates to be worn more? They have some pitting and look a little burned.
Has anyone been inside one of these that could give me a few pointers?
Thanks!
