How much oil used between changes?
On my 85 380SE, 105,000 miles I have no oil leaks and have not had to add oil between changes, except just recently. I checked my logs and I usually have changed oil about every 3 months or 2000-3000 miles. The other day I noticed some chain nosie on start up and thought well, time for the new guides and tensioner, and chain. Checked oil and I had to add about 1/1/2-almost 2 quarts. It was last changed in February '06 and has about 4,000 miles since then. No more chain noise but this is first time I noticed any oil usage and wondered what others experience. I have always used Castrol 10-40, sometimes 20-50 but at last change I used a house brand high milage oil and wondered if this may have accounted for the oil usage.

Hey Gary. As you know, I also have a 1985 380SE, but I have 267,500 miles on mine. Still does not use nor leak a drop of oil between the 3,000-3,500 mile changes, which I still find absolutely amazing. I keep thinking.... shouldn't this car be using or leaking some oil between changes? :D
Perhaps it is something simple. I bet it was where you had used a different oil the last time. I would go back to the other brand/weight and see what happens. |
also the extra miles may have made a difference. after 3000 i have found in some of my cars it will use some as the oil thins out.

also did you check it after the oil change? perhaps they didnt fill it up as they should have at the oil change place. tom w |
I'll keep my eye on it as I change oil myself. Due for changing now so I will start fresh and see what happens.
