Where is the NSS, that has been mentioned in posts? Is it, a relay? and what does it do ?

The NSS is mounted on the transmission. Not very easy to change lying on your back under the car, but realatively easy if the car is on a lift and you can remove a trans mount to allow a bit more room.

Did you try jump starting with the new battery in yet?

wise320e 08-30-2006 05:09 PM

no it isn't going yet. garage has it. will see what happens now...

Prelimnary report from the garage on my e 320. Still working on it to find out everything wrong. But "they" the garage said that the car wasn't in park. So they had to manually put it in park. The car then started. The starter is ok and the battery fully charged. The mechanic asked my son if the transmission had been replaced. Since we have only had it four months. We don't know. Now curious about what happened. Why didn't the car go into park.. Linkage problem ? Relay ? :(

<<Why didn't the car go into park>>

They don't go into P b/c the linkage bushing wears out and does not allow the selector to move the link the proper amount before the gear indicator plate stops the lever ... That is why we always ask the owner to try N and report back the finding.. there is no plate stop on either side of N as there is in P.
This part is aroud $3....

That sounds wonderfull...:D I was just searching the forum and thats what i figured is wrong. will let you know tomorrow after talking to the garage. thanks so much..

Same thing is happening with my son's 420SEL. Sometimes just put your foot out and roll the car a little bit to lock it in Park and it will start.

I had that problem twice in my previous car (260E).

First Time:
Came out of Target, started car, nothing happened, and I thought, "Dead battery." Luckily a Wal-Mart was a few stores down and I went in and bought a new battery. As I got into the car to open the hood, I noticed I had left the car in Drive when I originally parked, thus the no-start. I shifted into park, and the car started fine.

Second Time:
I had been using Lucas transmission fluid additive which, as you may know, is thick as molasses. I had evidently run low on normal tranny fluid and the car would not shift into park -- or reverse -- because the valve that prevents the transmission from shifting into reverse while the car is moving above a certain speed had not disengaged due to insufficient fluid pressure. Topping off transmission fluid resolved that issue. (Does not sound like this relates to your problem.)

Good News...!:) Per the non mb garage, the transmission is new, what happened or their story is when put back in a clip for gear selector was left off and the selector didn't go into Park. They have road tested it and called my son. Bill $81.00, not bad.. that includes tow, computer check, and labor.

thanks for all the help and suggestions, this forum is GREAT !!!
