MB 7-speed transmission fluid (MB 236.12)
1 Attachment(s)
Has anyone put this new tranny fluid in their 722.6, and if so, have you noticed any changes in shift properties either better/same or worse?
The specs (see attachment-posted by MBDOC awhile back) says it's backward compatible and my local dealer sells it. I'm about to change my fluid so I'm wondering if I shouldn't try to fix what ain't broke (use specified fluid) or go with MB's latest and greatest for the same pricer per ltr. Thanks in advance :D |
I've used the new fluid, installed it into my 1998 C230 back in june when the odometer showed around 84K miles.
My transmission has always worked very well, not surprisingly when slowing to a crawl the last shift into low can be harsh, but this has always occured on my car. I thought I noticed after installing the latest fluid that the thump into low had subsided, but probably just in my head, I've become much more intuitive in how my car drives so I compensate some, I'm very sympathetic to the mechanicals as the car ages. Seemed to me that after putting in the new fluid my upshifts were barely perceptible, but probably more my imagination then reality. So I know things haven't gotten worse after installing the new fluid, I placed a pan magnet in the trans pan, so hopefully trouble free for another fifty-thousand miles when I do another trans fluid change. The fluid is a wild purple color. |
I changed out the fluid in my '00 c280 at 60k miles with the 722.9 (3353) fluid. The fluid that came out of the transmission was brown and murky. The new stuff is pretty and purpley. :P That was 3,500 miles ago, so far, no problems to report.
Like Ethan said, the upshifts seemed slightly smoother at first, but could just as easily be in my head. :dizzy2: Changing out the used up old fluid with either the 722.6 or 722.9 specified fluid would probably yield the same result here. Having said all that, I don't think you can go wrong with using the new 722.9 fluid in the 722.6. In fact, it was actually $.50 less than the 722.6 fluid at my local dealer. |
MBSUA has a "large" stock of the 722.6 fluid...but when that stock is depleted they will supersede it to the newer version....DBAG already has done that!

Phil also mentioned the P/N was superceded from 001989450310 to 001989450313. Anyone out there know about any "deals"? I figured my next service (100k) I'd use the new stuff but at twice the cost it's hard to justify it. |
The 722.9 fluid part number 001-989-45-03-10 is a correct part number..
The 001-989-45-03-13 is also a good part number for the same fluid... MBUSA is playing a GAME..we sell lots of the 45-03-10 fluid (call dealer for current per-liter price)... Maybe you should try getting some from Peachtree City imports under that 45-03-10 number. |
