Hi.. a friend has a 92 500sl.. her roof doesnt close .. (like the back part of the soft top folds up and the lid flips up, but the front of the soft top doesnt unclick) the passenger window also does not work.. (doesnt come down)

what can this be??? please help as the car is outside...

thanks..

After the roof stops going up, can you hear any noise? Like is the motor still turning? This can be helpful to determine your problem.
Also, I don't think this is the problem because the roof starts to go up, but check all related fuses just to be safe and rule out ALL possibilites. (I had a recent instance of this when all my windows and sunroof would not work from the switches, but would work when the key was turned in the lock.)

SL SOFTTOP

Yes, in this condition this is normal. The front locks won't unlock until both front windows are lowered all the way. On an early version like this, there is a switch in the bottom of the door which the window mechanism closes when the window is all the way down. The soft top control module is responsible for all window activity, either by the soft top switch, or the power window switches. Needs to be properly diagnosed, I have had to replace a few control modules for this problem. Can you roll the windows down with the switches? If so, just lower them all the way, then use the soft top switch to operate the soft top. it should work ok then. If you can't lower the passengers window with the switch, it could be numerous problems. The switch itself COULD be the problem, but since it won't lower with the soft top switch, I doubt the switch in the console is bad. I would be more inclined to think it is either the power window electric motor, or the soft top control module.......Gilly

You never actually say if both windows go all the way down? If both windows go all the way down the top will work if the switchs in the doors tell the top controler "all is set"

I had a problem with mine and there is a switch in both doors that tell the controler the windows are down. If one of the windows doesn't go down all the way you're problem is probably in that door. If both go down fine my first guess would be to take the drivers door pannel off and jump the switch, the drivers gets more use.

It's a simple little two wire micro switch. I think it cost about $39.00

Good Luck

is changing this switch a DIY job??

dude.. all i need is a descent set of instructions and i'll be set.. if that is indeed the prob..

how hard is it to change the softop control module??? where is that located??

thanks

Turk......

Hey, read the first post I put up on this (it is post #3). I assumed what I was saying was correct based on how you stated the problem. I am assuming the passenger window won't work at all, either by operating the soft top switch or using the right power window switch. This would lead me to believe (in absence of being able to TEST the system) that if there is a component failure it would most likely be either the power window motor or the soft top control module. Of course it could be wiring. I'll tell you where the control module is, but don't go crying to me if you replace it and it's not the problem. The control module is behind the passenger seat, under the lift up panel, it's in the small storage compartment under the plastic "floor". If the window will work, but the soft top still won't open with the window all the way down, I'd say it's a safe bet the window "down" switch is bad or mis adjusted. It's not too bad of a job once the inner door trim panel is removed. But I'd start by diagnosing the power window system if the glass won't roll down at all........Gilly

Did you determine why the fuses were blown?
I am glad you got it working for her. :)
Thanks for posting the results!!

BmwTek 04-11-2001 11:56 PM

I am glad it all worked out for your friend! I bet she is happy you fixed her problem!
But did you ever figure out why the fuses blew in the first place?

And THANK YOU for posting the outcome! We like to hear what happened!
