Azhari, there is a connector right on the electromagnet coil. If you can't reach it around the pulley, removing fan, shroud, detensioning belt, and removing the pulley takes about 15 min.
Fastbenz, the freespin is normal. If it decided to clutch in while your fingers were on it, you would lose them - and ruin the fan. The switch turns on at 100C, if it works correctly. Steve |

Well done, Steve.
I'm in the mood to get going again! Fastbenz - I'd rather lose the fan than my fingers, any day. Before u get a new clutch, be positively sure by applying voltage directly to it (bypassing temp sensor) with the engine running. If the fan still free-wheels instead of turning with the engine speed, u r halfway there. Last thing to check would be if the wires to the clutch are broken, but this does not happen under normal circumstances. In my case, it is a possibility coz the wires are fried due to an earlier short in the circuit. In some places, the insulation has burnt off revealing the copper inside. The wires are also really stiff due to the heat produced from the earlier short. The could be an open circuit in the wiring henceforth. These factors provide me with some faint glimmer of hope in saving the clutch...under normal circumstances, I would say my clutch has gone south...:p Hope you've verified that the clutch is really faulty before you get a new one. By the way, which model do you have? Good luck. Azhari Babybenz 1991 190e 1.8 |

No I dont know if it is fried or not. I do remember when I was driving my car last year in the summer time, I heard the fan kick on.
What is the aux. fan used for? |

I've got 2 aux fans on Babybenz.
One is connected to the aircon high pressure switch (it works only with the aircon ON) and the other is connected to an engine temperature switch (is turned on by the engine temp at 87 deg C). If you've got one aux fan (like my kid brother's 190e), it should be connected in parallel with the engine temp switch as well as the aircon high pressure switch. Meaning, the aux fan can be turned on by either one of these switches closing. Azhari Babybenz 1991 190e 1.8 |

Clutch fried; as tested...
Pulled the wires from the clutch and tested them, no short.
Henceforth, the clutch is fried. Bought a new clutch and wiring loom (the old one was stiff and the insulation was cracking all over the place), and got a tech to do the job. Total cost of job : New Fan clutch - $65.00 New Wiring Loom - $15.00 Labour - $30.00 Short circuit in previous circuit did not short out any wires (tested today) but was due to the defective clutch itself. Money well spent, now the running temp in stop-go traffic is around 83 deg C. Well done. Any one for the books... Azhari Babybenz 1991 190e 1.8 |
