Hi! I got a 1997 E420 and I am very pleased with the car. However, I found the ride a little too firm. As a matter of fact, I like the ride on the E320 better. I talked to a mechanic and he said it's because the E420 has a different suspension and being more powerful, it, therefore, has a firmer ride. What's your opinion?

Unless you have the *sport* package on the E420 the suspension is almost the same as the E320. Many times *ride quality* can be compromised by low-profile tires.

Thanks M.B.Doc. Your answer is highly appreciated. How can I tell whether my car has the "sports" package or not? Also, if changing the tires can improve the ride, what size of tires do you recommend? What's the size of the tires on the E320? Right now, I am using Pirelli W210 winter tires, size 205/55R16.

All of the sport package cars had 17" wheels & tires!

Sport package would also have a badge.
205/55 is not the stock tire size, it was 215/55. it sounds like you just purchased the car, so you may want to look to see if the previous owners made any modifications (shock & suspension)??

Thanks everyone for the info. I bought the car in Sept last year and it came wiyj a set of almost new all seasons radial tires. I live in a snowy country amd that's why I got a set of winter tires. I am not sure what the size on the original all seasons radial is but I will check that out. Nice to know that the stock tire is 215/55.

Tire Size
Lucky,
Check the driver's door post. The MB certification tag, tire sizes, etc. should be posted there. Sometimes tires sizes 'change'! Also the owners manual lists the recommended tire size including 'inclement' weather sizes. |

Hi Jim:
Thanks for the info. I did check the door post and it did say 215/55. I should be putting my summer tires back on soon and they are 215/55. I will see if the ride improves. OTOH, there shouldn't be that much difference between the ride of 215/55 and 205/55, right? BTW, enjoyed the web site and the pictures of your car. Nice! |

The 215/55 tire is a little higher as the 205/55 and is better capable of reducing the bumps in the road. The ride will feel a little less stiff/harsh with the 215/55...
greetingz,
