ok so the vaccum lines are hooked up and correctly. How much do you adjust the mix? Have made a few turns and it still wont idle at all. It runs more smoothly but when i take my foot off the gas pedal it just dies. The guy i bought it from jsut said it was running hot and needed a new head gasket. i did all that. Any other ideas?

You gotta push that adjuster down to get it to actually move the adjuster. Are you doing that or just turning it without pushing it in? Did you read the 07.3 section on your disc yet?

I read the section but it doesnt tell you how much to move the screw. i felt in engaging when i was adjusting- doesnt tell you how much to adjust it either though. Since it econo went up allof a sudden did i adjust it too far?

You adjust it until the mixture is correct..........there is no "magic" amount, depends on how much the mixture is off.

ok a few mech here in town said it sounds like a catalytic converter prob with the bogging down and heavy pedal- with the mixture being off would that cause the econ to go to the red?

ok i have been told by other merc mech to unhook cat converter and run it down highway to see if that stops boggin down and heavy pedal symptoms. He seems to think having air flow was restricted once got to run temp. The other may straighten out once air flow it restored or may have a bad idle control valve- or idle control unit. i did clean out the icv and it was very dirty. Any ideas?

Problem Solved!

just wanted to update everyone and thank you guys for all the great advice. Turns out the catalytic converter was stopped up causing the power loss while driving. Took it off and drove it on the highway and it drove fine. Then took out the idle control valve and soaked it overnight in wd40 and cranked. Adjusted the mix a little more and now it idles on its own and almost smooth. Just a little more fine tuning and i am on my way. Thanks again for your help!

Once you get the cat replaced do a search on these pages for "setting duty cycle". You will be able to dial in pretty darn close without an exhaust gas analyzer. You will need a digital volt meter capable of reading duty cycle. If you don't already have one, Sears sells a decent one for about $30 or so.
