the nu MB trans magnet is donut shaped and thicker then the square one.
I actually have the nu style attached outside front passenger side of trans pan - plus square old style inside.

Bob I, the copy I have is just a black and white photo copy. Possibly there is a low quality color picture set on WIS.

Part number for pan magnet?

Where can you get the pan magnet? I now have a 2001 Jaguar XJR with the Mercedes E55 transmisssion in it. Is it purchased at the dealer and if so, do you know the part number?
Thanks
Chris

Call the dealer and ask. They will know the part number. It's cheap.

an 01 trans probably has the pad-type magnet in it already, I may have a start date or start trans# on that somewhere here. It was introduced by MB and they recommended putting one in "if" the pan was off for any reason.

Gilly - please post the start date for the pan magnet if you can find it. I need to know if my '99 has one since a transmission service is coming up. Had the transmission serviced at 50,000 miles and there is no indication of the dealer installing a pan magnet. So mine either already has one or the bulletin from Mercedes hadn't come out yet saying to add one. Also, I seem to recall a thread here that the pan magnet now used is the one from the A class and the cost has gone from about five bucks to about fifteen bucks.

Thanks Gilly. Looks like my '99 needs a magnet. Cost looks like it's only about $2.20. What a deal.

magnet is cheap but you've got to drain and drop the pan. It is easy to drain the trans without contaminating the fluid. If the fluid is new enough just strain it before putting it back in (get a funnel with built in strainer). the pan seal is reusable if it is not too old as well. Clean the drain plug area and drain into a perfectly clean 1 gallon container. no need to drain the convertor if it's only to add the magnet. not sure if it worth all the trouble though simply to add a magneyt. I doubt adding a magnet on the outside of the pan will have much value (anyone want to chime in on this). the flow in the pan is pretty intense particularly near the filter.

I completed the trans fluid and filter change at 100k miles (first time for the car) and driven 20 miles, so far so good. didn't need readaptation.

See my post #21 above. I'm coming up on a transmission service at 100,000 miles (second one) and wanted to have the magnet on hand if I needed one. Looks like I do.

Not sure if i trust MB completly on this one but I believe their updated service recomendation for these filled for life trans is:
Fluid and filter change at 60K, add magnet if missing and that's it going forward. No more service. personally i would change fluid and filter again at 60K but that's just me.

Can anyone comment on the effect on the tranmissions from city driving in traffic versus high speed highways~90mph tops.

hmmm

I just changed the fluid in my CE... no magnet... just a little bit of the usual muddy sludge on the bottom of the pan...almost negligible..

i guess i will wait another 30k and add a magnet... i can't stand crawling under there and removing the pan.
