On my 1987 300E that I am preparing for state inspection, I just today noticed that the Sunroof will not open. I can hear the motor operating when I push the open and close button but it seems not connected to the roof. Is there a way to open the sunroof without using the electric motor?... Pry it open or something?... or do I have to take out the whole headliner?

If the cable has become detached for whatever reason you may be able to manually slide the roof back somewhat. Be careful not to force it too much. You may do more harm than good. If the panel won't go back then you will have to find a way to remove the panel liner which is a major pain when the roof is closed.

Earl, when you say you can hear the motor running, do you mean like it's trying to turn or is it just humming. The one sure way to check to see if the cable has become detached is to open it manually from the trunk. I am sure the set up is the same for all Benzes. In the trunk, on the left side you should see an access hole to the sunroof motor. There is a bolt there that you can use your tire iron to turn, or you can use a 17mm socket and turn the bolt counter-clockwise. This is how I open and closed my sunroof, until I repaired some wiring. If the cable is broken, then you'll be cranking but the roof panle will just sit there.
Just curious, does your state inspect the operation of sunroofs as part of the inspection? I only ask becuase it seems you are concerned about the sunroof not working because of an up coming insp.

Ok Scott and Rick... I will go out now and follow your instructions. I would never have found that nut to manually open the roof. Thanks! This net is marvelous. No I do not need the sunroof operable for Maryland State inspection... but I just noticed the problem while in the process of preparing the car for inspection.
Also... the cables for both rear windows have come unwound off the spool and they are crimped and tangled. Any sugestions as to how to streighten out that mess? I think the previous owner must have had a nervous habit of pushing buttons while driving. Smiles and thanks again.

I just came back from looking at the situation and I see that the electric motor is operating.. the bolt turns as I push the button. I lifted the rear of the sunroof and peeked inside with a flashlight and I can see a tubular bar running down the center of the roof, from the back edge of the sunroof all the way to the edge of the back window area.
I can also see a black panel of sorts... the same width as the sunroof that moves back and forth along the car roof as I push the electric button in either direction. Its appears as though this pannel is supposed to be attached to the sunroof panel but it is not attached for whatever reason. I attempted to pry the sunroof back .... at various stages of the open/close run of the track but it will not budge... seems to not want to drop enough at the back of the sunroof so that it can be slid back. Also it seems to maybe have a latch of sorts at the front edge of the roof. At this point the best solution seems to be an old fashioned can opener. Any better ideas? Smiles.

This als o happened to my w124 about a month ago. What you do is, go in the trunk and unscrew the nut a little. Then hold it with a wrench and twist the piece that sticks out the middle, once you align this properly the motor will work. I did this to my car and it was working fine ever since then. Hope this helps.

Thanks BB but the motor works fine. My latest up date is that I did not need the can opener. I managed to slip an allen wrench down along the rear sides of the roof to release a latch of some sort...This let the roof drop and I was able to manually slide it open.
The black plastic frame like piece that is the same width of the sunroof and that attaches to the back end of the sunroof has broken off. I have it. What do I have to do to remove the sunroof? Can I get it out from the outside with the roof open... without having to take down the ceiling panel of the car? Smiles.

I have taken the screws from the rails after sliding the roof back as far as it will go. I have also taken the chrome strip plates off the top of the rails in addition to the air deflector flap at the front of the roof. The pop up panel at the rear of the roof is still attached and I cannot remove either the pop up panel or the sunroof. Anyone know what to do next?
I'm beginning to feel like Charlie Brown.

I should learn to listen to Lucy and read the manual. I subscribed to alldata.com and read how to remove the sunroof.
I'm now an expert! Two significant parts of the sunroof are broken. The rear gutter seal and the right and left white metal trains that ride in the tracks and that are attached to the cable bar. I suspect that the kids of a former owner were giving themselves joy rides on the sun roof. Now for parts! Smiles

These are the part numbers I need and the parts shop here does not have them. Any ideas where I might try next?
124 782 05 12: train drivers side 124 782 06 12: train passenger side 124 782 08 24: plastic rear gutter and seal that attaces by plastic ribons to trains.

EJSharp,
Partsshop may not have them, but did you check Fastlane? Mercedesshop has 2 different parts stores, make sure you check them both. Make sure you buy from here as they are best prices and have the best/quickest service! If not, then you can try benzbin.com, or the dealer?
