Buying a 400 E

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to this site and to MB cars. I've always had Volvo's but want to add a Mercedes to the fleet. My brother has a ' 92 400 E that we've had for over a year. It has been great and only has 60 K miles. Now I want one for myself and have found another ' 92 locally.

The one that I found has 190 K miles and has been kept up well. Known problems are:

-a/c doesn't work
-needs tires
-possibly needs a timing chain
-exhaust is getting a little loud

I know that these cars also had problems with the engine wiring harness. The owner wants $5000 for the car. I'm seriously considering it. Any suggestions? How long do these V8's last?

Thanks,
Dave

5000 is too much. A/C could be the evaporator which will be expensive even if you DIY. If this is still the original timing chain it does need to replaced.. as soon as possible. With the M119 its really a two man job or a trip to the shop. Exhaust is probably less serious but ontop of the other issues your looking at a substantial repair bill.

Edit - Wiring Harness

600-800 I think, depends on your source. The fellow I bought my E420 (W124) from spent 843 USD on it. Again if it hasn't been replaced you have to do it first thing.

I would find out WHY the a/c doesn't work. Of course the owner will say it just needs a recharge or something like that. In any event, you want to avoid a W124 that needs an evaporator. Unless you do it yourself, this job can cost $2500 to have done.
