420 SEL Gauges dead

Just bought this nice old ride last week. Speedo, fuel tack and oil pressure went south at the same time. Checked fuse box, nada. Car runs great, just how fast/far? Help please. George

First thing I would check is to pull the gauge cluster out and check that all wires are secure. Possible one or more may have disconnected. If you are not sure how, cut two 10 inch wires from old wire clothes hangers. Keep the wires straight but creat a small hook at the end of each. On each side of the cluster slip the hooked end of the wire in about two inches up from the bottom of the cluster. Careful here not to tear the dash. Keep the hooked end turned toward the gauges. Gently tug left, right, left, right. Until the cluster is free. Hope this helps.

I would suspect a ground problem.

I had the same thing on my 420.

Pull the cluster, disconnect the wires so you can remove it completely. (no need to remove steering wheel- just adjust all the way out) Back there somewhere toward the middle there is a bolt or a screw with about 3 or 4 ground wires connected to it. Remove the bolt, sand all terminals as well as metal piece that bolt screws into- coat everything well with a thin coat of dielectric grease and reassemble- that should fix it things.

BTW I had exactly the same symptoms, only the speedo still worked.

Now do yourself a favor and change ALL the fuses in the box. As you found out those old fuses can fool you.
