190 E 2.6 1991 transmission.
Hi,
I have the above vehicle and it has some undesirable transmission traits. It has 133,000 miles on it. It starts in 2nd which I beleive is normal, shifts to 3rd a bit too soon (I think) around 20 MPH and immediately shifts to 4th unless I stand on the gas or shift the selector to 3. I fI use the dhifter manually it performs just great. The down shift parts appear to work OK. What does it need done to it to rectify this problem? Also, I repalced the timing chain recently as it had some noise. It still has lifter like noise, are the valve clearances adjustable? If so, what's the procedure and what are the clearances? Thank you, Sean. |

Sounds like probably the TV (throttle valve) cable is in need of adjustment, this is the one that hooks up under the air cleaner and goes back to the right side of the transmission.
The valve noise part is probably a worn out hydraulic compensator, it's sort of like the overhead cam engine version of a hydraulic lifter on a pushrod engine, located on the rocker arms under the valve cover. Either that or a weal oil pump OH, if you had the cam off for the timing chain, you may have lost one of the cup washers between the compensator and the valve stem. Gilly
