I recently took delivery of my first Mercedes, a C240 automatic. One thing which bothers me is the lack of an oil dip-stick. Is it possible to purchase a dip-stick for this engine and is the tube for it in the rear of the block? The other question I have is how does the plastic engine cover come off? Thank in advance for answers.

David,

Can't you check your oil from the FSS counter? The manual should tell you how. Did they really go ahead and take away the dipstick for USA? Wow! Are we like to dumb to check the oil ourselves?

From what I have read, the new C class doens't have a dipstick. I don't think there is even a tube for a dipstick.

So much for using a topsider oil change device with this engine.
While I suppose that they want to reduce the risk of getting
contaminants in, I would have a problem if I didn't have a
dipstick. What if the low oil light fails and then a seal goes?
This, I think, is an example of over complicating a simple situation.

The result of mercedes' improper thinking that they built magnificent machines...an engine without a dipstick.
Is that USA only or is it MB common use nowadays? I have seen several C classes before, but have not looked into that detail...

I just checked into it. You can still extract the oil. The dipstick tube is capped like the transmission's. It looks as though Mercedes is getting rid of the dipstick gradually in all its models.

I would just like to add that this no dipstick caper that Mercedes pulled seemed like an April Fool's joke to me. I had to go see it with my own eyes. I asked the salesman how the oil came out and he said the oil drained from the bottom of the pan... hmmm.
