Once for all, please set the record straight. Should a 94 E420 start with 1st gear or not? Mine does not but after searching this forum, I am getting mixed opinions. Also, I received my 2CD manual library today and I was reading about a "First gear start relay module". So I am guessing that it should start from 1st gear?

YES, all 400e/E420 start off in 1st gear.

The final drive ratio of 2.24:1 is too tall for it to start off in 2nd gear.

To verify this, put the transmission selector in "2", NOT "B". Start off driving easy. You will see the shift from first to second.

You are absolutely right. It does start from 1st gear. I don't know why I never bother to notice it. I was always under the impression that it started from 2nd. But you are right! It does start from 1st.
