Hello All,
It appears that the a/c in my 94 S350 is leaking out the freon. My mechanic suspects the gizmos behind the dash.

Does anyone have any experience with failures of this sort?

Just looking to get some knowledge before calling the dealer.

Thanks!!
Neil

There are just too many possibilities. You need to recharge it and check for leaks. I've seen evaporators, expansion valves (which is buried under wipers), and compressor seal. Haven't run into condenser problems on these models.
Anyway, get it checked out and hope that it isn't your evaporator. There is a lot of labor involved $$$.

Good Luck,
Vinamg

Thanks! My mechanic did recharge it, but it didn't last overnight. My wife heard some hissing from the dash.... so it sounds bad.

Oh well, guess I better make an appointment. I hear something like 20 hours labor to get into the dash....

Thanks again,
Neil.

Do a search on evaporator replacements for a 140 chassis as this has been covered a lot in the past. This is a common failure on 124 and 140s and now some MLs are also failing.
The 140 is about a 21.8 hour labor and $700 evaporator cost not including a new drier and expansion valve while in there. The 140 from 92 onwards to around 95 were very troublesome in many ways...the reason I unloaded mine!

Good luck,

YIKES....If these hours are true...and I have no reason to doubt the experts...I'd have to say "Design for maintainability" went out the window for MB in the early 90's.

How can any car company design something that takes that long to repair, let alone one with the reputation of MB?

It reminds me of the american cars that took 5 hours to change the spark plugs.

Tobias, thanks for the bad news, I think.....

I'll do the evaporator search.

It might be cheaper for me to buy a bunch of freon and charge it up every other day....... (J/K)

Oh well...
