My 78 240D has developed an oil spill much like the valdeze. It is coming from the vaccum pump and shooting out the hose into the air filter housing. I need to know if this may be fixed easily by gasket replacement or if I need to purchase large $$$$ pump.

I know a vacuum pump repair kit is available. Do a search, I recall a thread on this subject a while ago.

The diaphragm is broken, it is a simple job. Pay attention to the two check valves, they need to go back in the same position.
