When can i start using Mobile 1
 

Just bought a new Toyota for my wife and was told by the salesman to wait until we put 15,000 miles on the car.
He gave no reason.I called another Dealer and they said i could start using it now.???????????

There are manufactures using synthetic right off the production line.
It a non issue...the engine will still break in but take a little longer to do so...benefit is that the scuffing is reduced.

Search 'Google' your find some papers on the fallacies of using synthetics.

Next to "What oil should I use?" and "Which is better synthetic or dino?" this has to be the next hottest oil topic?

The arguments are...

Engine needs to be broken in.
Opposition says new engines are already broken in from factory.
Synthetic oil will seep through the rings because they have not seated properly.
Rubbish say the opposition a 5W30 is a 5W30 regardless of it being a synthetic why would it slip past the rings?
Synthetic oil does not allow rings to properly sit. Hogwash says the opposition remember we believe that the engine is already broken in from factory so bah!
Other people say get that crappy OEM oil out of there as soon as possible, it has engine bits and crap in it also its been sitting in your car since the factory sometimes for months.

Personally I think the number one problem is excessive acceleration and abuse during the first 5k miles that causes problems in the long run. Some people really go at it with their new cars after a very short while:eek:

Any idea what weight i should use and how often i should change it? I change the oil in all my cars every 3000 miles.

Toyota has that information ....... check the hand book.

I'm in the opposing camp. You need to be running that engine at half-throttle for short bursts when it's new. You should be hitting full throttle for short bursts by 1K miles. This increases the pressure behind the rings, helping them wear into the cylinder bores as they should.

Long before 5K miles, you should have your foot into it for long stretches.

But as I've only broken in about a dozen new engines in my life, I don't have all the answers. Note that the hardest working parts in your engine are in the valve train, and these parts don't care one bit how far you press the pedal.

i've only owned 1 new car... a 1998 expedition... we drove it gingerly for the first 3k... actually it's always been driven gingerly.

i didn't even know that it was supposed to get 5w-30... i always put in 20w-50.. changed the oil at 3k...never more than 4k..

i run 5w-30 synthetic now... the car has 158k.. i see no reason why the engine won't go another 100k... it will be interesting to see how long the tranny holds up. i change it religiously every 30k...same with fuel filter.

virtually no problems with this truck... i would say the mileage is split 65 percent highway 35 percent city.

You're going to get a better answer from Toyota than here - but not from the salesman.

toyotas are so friggin reliable you could get some used up stinky oil from a gas station and it will still run 200K+:)

Hmmmmmm,........ 4 million vehicles recalled.
So much for the hype about Toyota reliability. ;)

I don't think anyone's going to want to mention the problems Toyota has had with oil turning to sludge. Although there's never been a recall, they've replaced a few engines... :eek:

toyota replaced an engine in a neighbors mini-van... they tried to back their way out of it because he didn't get the oil changed at toyota... he had receipts and records of regular oil changes..

his engine died from sludge.

There have been 4.1 million recalls from Toyota in the past 3 years ( world-wide ).
You'll have to do your own reasearch. ;)
