Similarities between gas and diesel?
hey everyone,
I'm writing this essay for my writing class and it has to be a compare/contrast essay and I chose gas [engines] vs. diesel [engines]....I know a lot of differences between the two...but i cant think of very many similarities...can you? let me know, Thanks, Kris |
Actually they're very similar.
Only real difference is method by which fuel is ignited. The fuel's different, too, of course. |
both have pistons going up and down in the cylinders, valves and camshafts, rods and cranks. they are water or air cooled. if water cooled they have a pump and a radiator. they both have air filters fuel filters and fuel pumps. they both have electric starters, alternators and a battery. they both use transmissions to convert the power to something usable by the car, and the power is transimtted throught the rear differential. they have oiling systems and oil pumps and all mercedes have oil coolers.
good luck with your paper. tom w |
They both use a camshaft to actuate valves and the compression-ignition-power-exhaust stroke sequence is identical although the thermodynamics (adiabatic this and isentropic that) are very different.
As long as you note that Diesel is far superior, you should get an A :) Sixto 93 300SD |
Both are internal combustion engines. Both can run on fossil fuels, except if you run WVO or B100 in the diesel.
|
both are 4 stroke engines.both have expanding heat pushing down pistons.same quantity of diesel produces 30% more heat than gas. compression ratios very diff.
