Throttle nonResponse - M112

Test driving a 2001 E320 wagon and has a throttle problem. M112 engine.

Sometimes doesn't respond at all to first inch of pedal press, then suddenly takes off fast a second or two later.

Seems like something electrical but what?

On just about any other vehicle I would say Throttle position Sensor, but on an M-B I don't know what performs the function of a TPS

No, I mean nothing.

Press pedal 3/4 inch, nothing for 3 seconds, then big acceleration.

Clearly an electrical noncontact, but unsure what.
