Gentlemen, will this or a similar procedure work for an 89 300E that has 4 dashes ---- on the Becker stereo display?

I was instructed in tech forum to take it out in order to check the fuse in the back...I didnt know.

Becker Radio

The dashes are probably your prompt to enter the four digit code to enable the radio. Once the 12V battery power is removed, you have enter a code that came with the radio to enable it. The dealer should have the code if you don't!

The faults codes for the radio display E1 thru E5 and refer to specific faults in the radio system.

Just added the DTCs to my page: http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/MB_S500.html
Click on #9. These are good for Becker radios between 1991 and 1993.

Tnx for the info, Steve.

Where would I find my code ?
I have the owner's manuals and 6 page original Becker stereo how-to/info guide. I havent seen the code in either.

I've read some other posts where people write that the radio must stay powered on for @24 hrs before I can get to a point where I can enter the code, do you agree ?

Can anyone explain the steps of how I enter the code once I find it and get the radio ready?

The radios that come up with dashes ---- can not be reset with a code. They will need to go to the dealer to be reset. These radios were installed from 1986 to about 1990. These radios do not go into code mode unless their internal battery is dead. Be sure to replace it first and then there is no problem disconnecting the radio from the cars battery.

Thanks Steve, excellent info. Would Benz dealer have the internal battery you mentioned?
Any feel on how much reseting the radio and installing a battery at the Dealership will cost ?
