I was choming the inside of my head lihgt houseings today (see performance paddock) and in order to get at them I had to take the intake off the car (1994 E420) on the drivers side there is a sensor mass air or something and i disconnected it. Then I put it all back together and forgot to put the sensor connector back on and you guessed it I started the motor and the check engin light came on. I am 99% sure that the sensor made it come on. Now my question is will the light turn off or will i have to make an expensive trip to the dealer.
Please help me and my stupid mistake.

Normally I wouldn't recommend this, but I would do it if I were you. I did this before and it worked... unplug your battery for about 10 minutes and the hook it back up. Your check engine light should clear by doing this.

The check engine lights will come on (when something is wrong) and will go out when everything is OK again.
The car's compu will remember the faults and the dealer when necessary can read them. Just connect the sensor and if everything is OK, the light has to go out again. No need to disconnect the battery... greetingz,

In this case the light will probably stay on. That is assuming this to be a US car with Diagnostic Module.
It can be reset by disconnecting the battery as David said. This will reset everything including the radio, be sure you have your radio code.

That sensor you refer to is the intake air temp sensor. They are cheap and they do go bad, so the next time it's in your hand I'd consider popping a new one in. Just my $.02

Reset the code
You can reset the code (assuming US car) by the following:
1) turn the ignition on so all instrument cluster lamps are illuminated, 2) at the right side of the engine compartment near the battery, press the button on the diag panel for about 4 sec, 3) read the number of flashes; sb '9' for "INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR, OPEN/SHORT CIRCUIT". 3) Within 20 sec, press and hold the button for 8-9 sec. 4) Shut the ignition off for 10 sec. This method eliminates the car radio code reset and it's quicker. In fact any code from the DIAG module can be reset by this method. |

WOW!!!!
Thanks soo much
You guys have just saved me some money, I did the button reset. But I am sure that battery would have worked. I love this sight it is one of the best if not the best thing to happen to a mercedes fan-mechanic. And by the way JimF how did you know that it would flash 9 times and if you have a list of the other codes can you send them to me or tell me where to get them. Oh did I mention that it WORKED!!! Thanks All

Good job Jim...I hope my identification of the part helped (and the reason I knew, did I mention, is because I did the same thing?!?)
Glad things worked out...this site at its finest (yet another reason to drive a ridiculous distance to get your car serviced at MBAutowerks!)

DTC page
Subman,
Glad it worked ok. That I knew it would be nine (9), check my page for codes for all modules (click the red house). Your code is in menu #5. This site has the greatest collection of knowledgeable MB people on the INet. And they always help! That's what's so great. |

Do these fault codes and check engine lights have something to do with the US specific OBD II system?
greetingz,

I had a 92 Jaguar XJS V-12 that would have the check engine light come on (whenever I did the stupid task of washing the engine down with a garden hose). Disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it minutes later would correct the problem. That trick resets the ECU.

OBDxx
MBenz,
My car is OBD1A, I think, since it is an '94 model. As I understand it, in '96, OBDII is what MBs are compliant to as well as all other cars. But you can read the codes from the X11 Diag connector as well as the OBDII compliant connector inside the car. The codes that I've posted on my page are MB codes which can be read from an AST scanner via X11 (or from the built in LED/switch combo) and are, strictly speaking, written in MB-speak. The OBDII versions are a little more cryptic in nature. |

DTC test
Peter,
If you ask me, based on my knowledge of your car, I must say that I don't know. But, since my '91 190E, '93 E300, '94 E320 all had the button/LED, I would say that you have one also. It is located in the right front side of the engine compartment and probably has a plastic cap in it. When removed, you'll see a small button and LED with a bunch of labeled pin sockets. So, Peter, press away! You'll probably see just one (1) flash. And that's good, means NO FAULTS in SYSTEM! Go have a beer! And don't forget to buy me one! [Edited by JimF on 04-24-2001 at 12:10 PM] |
