Low fluid level automatic transmission: what signs?

What are the signs when the fluid level in my 722.440 automatic transmission is too low? I read somewhere about a limp mode??

That is a "mechanical" auto trans..no electronics.. low fluid level will cause slippage.

I notice the fluid level on the transmission dipstick barely makes the lower, 180 degrees F marker (or 80 degrees C).
The engine starts and idles fine, but when I put the stick from P into D and drive off, the car suddenly loses power after some 50-100 yards. When halted, with the stick still in D, the engine shudders, and then stalls while showing the red, low battery signal light on the instrument cluster. Just like releasing the clutch too fast on a manual transmission. Shifting the stick back into D, the engine starts and runs fine again.

Does that looks like low ATF fluid?

My plan is to add 100ml fresh ATF fluid with a 50ml vetinary syringe via the dipstick opening. I understand the difference between the min and max marker is 300ml. Auto transmission is some 6K off from a filter change/service.

Not that you asked me, but what you describe doesn't sound like the result of low trans. fluid. I would point the finger at a sensor (like maybe a MAF or O2).
Then again, if your fluid is low, add some...this way you can eliminate low fluid as a cause.

Yes, having the trans fluid at the correct level is a good idea...have you seen any signs of a leak..must be going somewhere.

If the fluid "quality" is in question don't wait 6K miles...change the fluid NOW.

Problem turned out to be a dodgy coil pack that fires two plugs. Engine was running on two cilinders. Had both packs replaced. Auto box is fine, and the fluid level ok again...:)
