Is 120 psi too high?

Is 8 to 9 atm to high for cold (70F) oil in a 94K motor in a 300D?

I dont know about a diesel but in a gas engine thats enough to wash bearings and cause BIG problems. How do you know its pushing that much pressure?

Help! It's about to blow....

Tested it with a higher range pressure gage than the standard, i.e.. I removed the peg on the upper end of the gage because needles that peg make me nervous. This car was bought off the heap after seeing this obvious problem. Cold oil idle show 8 atm. Hot oil pressure is 1.5 atm @ idle and 8 atm @ "3x100"

I understand that the oil pump has a relief set at around 8 atm. On earlier engines there is another relief set at around 5 atm, but I cann't find info on the '84 5 cyl 3.0 engine. I may bust the oil filter assembly off and dismantle it, but it's only exploratory. I need to test oil pressure at the oil galley to know what the bearings see. Any ideas where to tap in?

is the oil very old/thick?

Since oil pressure drosp signficantly after warming up.
Could the oil have thickened/sludged up through aging?

I am sure you have thought about it but just would like to put in what first comes to mind.

Good luck
