My car has 126 000kms and still has the original belt which is quite dry and cracking all over. I'll be getting this problem fixed in the next 20 days at the latest. I would like to know just what to expect in terms of cost, tips on things related that I should also consider etc... My dealer quoted me around $200 Canadian without the tensioner for the job. Is this resonable? Also when I changed my own oil for the first time I noticed some oil sludge coming from the front end of the block near the housing for the timing chain. It is near the top of the cylinder head. I looked at the coolant at it seems to be in excellent condition. It is clear and smells fine, possibly a touch acidic.

Anything seem out of the ordinary?

Much appreciated guys, thank you

Mike McKinney

SHYNE,
Oil leak could be valve cover gasket. Is it leaking by
half moon section in the center of the head, above
timing cover??? As for changing the belt it is quite easy.
$200 cdn - $127 usd seems high. Many posts how to do it in the archives. Belt I believe is <$30.00 usd.

Coolant is cheap and you only need one gallon. Should be
changed if more than 30,000 mi or 2 years. Check your
service records if you have them.

If you have the proper tools, you can easily change the serpentine belt yourself. It is not hard at all and definitely cheaper as 200cdn.

I have recently renewed the O-ring in my thermostat housing (it was leaking) and wanted to change the coolant as well, since it has been on the engine all the 370.000km without ever being changed.
When I had the coolant out, it was looking as good (and maybe even better) as new coolant, so I brought it back into the coolant system. MB coolant is great and stays very clear as long as the engine doesn't spill oil in it.

greetingz,

Shyne,

If the 190E engine is similar to an M103 (and I think it might be) you have a bracket behind the tensioner that is y-shaped. The bottom of the y points to the passenger side of the car. If this setup is on your car, the bolt hole on the bottom of the y is through the cover into the engine. The manuals tell how you reseal it with the proper MB goop. I had a leak there also on my M103 and Permatex orange high temp silicon is performing an admirable job in lieu of the MB high priced goop. You have to take the tensioner off to get this bracket out. At your mileage it would be a good idea to replace the tensioner and its shock while you have everything apart.

If your engine isn't configured this way, I apologize for the waste of bandwidth.

Thank you all guys for your responses so far. The job for me seems to be a tad advanced. My tools are limited as is my confidence in this area. I've only done one oil change by myself. I will take a stab at doing the coolent myself though. I was wondering how much to replace the bent, tensioner and shock? I was quoted on the belt only, installed for $200 Canadian dollars. Anything else I'm missing guys? The sludge itself is at the front portion of the block, behind or around the timing chain cover. It has dripped down and when I took off the belly pan, I could see the oil has leaked down to the oil pan. Coolent still seems ok but, still obviously I'm scared about it being the cylinder head leaking oil.

At this time the serpentine belt seems more important as it makes noise and is clearly worn out. What is a fare price?

The price seems a little high on the belt jog to me also, but in Canadian dollars, someone said equals $127 US, seems a little closer. I think at a dealership, they may get as much as 50 or 60 dollars for the belt. If they aren't opposed, you could save some by buying the belt elsewhere. I am unsure what the labor cost is there. Maybe you could ask how many HOURS they charge for the job. Shouldn't be much more that .6 to .8 hours. On the oil leak, first let me set a few things straight. This is a 190E 2.6, that is the 2.6 liter (litre?) version of the 300E motor, yes they are both 103 motors. The 103 has a reputation for leaking oil at what is called the front cylinder head cover lip seal. It sounds like that is what you have going on. You will see oil in front of the cylinder head, it leaks down the right side of the motor. To really tell, look at the front of the motor where the metal pipe that leads to the right heater hose runs. The ledge that the metal pipe bolts to, if that is getting oily, I am sure it is the lip seal. It is a rather time consuming job, about 3 hours for a decent MB tech to do. The parts are minor, you'd need the valve cover gssket, the lip seal itself, and maybe a "radial" seal, it is a round seal in the cylinder head front cover that the rotor bracket runs through, it could have some minor leakage also. There is a metal to metal sealant that has to be used to bond the cylinder head front cover to the front of the cylinder head, be sure to specify that they use Loctite 5900 to seal this area, it works the best........Gilly
