Odd Sound from cam area...

I need some help!

I was on my way home today from the bay area in the 88 300TE, and started to notice a funny noise coming from my motor when I was going about 80mph. It disappeared when I went to WOT and disappeared wen I took my foot off the gas. Anywhere inbetween there was noise.

Anyways, I got back home, and parked it, and put it into park. I was getting my stuff together and noticed the sound was prominent. Well, I popped the hood, and looked around, and opened the oil cap. Heard the noise a bit more distinctly. It sounds like a plunger type of noise.

Also, the car runs silky smooth, and there are no excessive vibrations. Just this wierd damn noise... Anyone have an idea? I have no tools (I am away at school), and am very worried about my baby.

Anyways, please help me, and THANKS in advance!

Justin, it may be a malfunctioning timing chain tensioner. I'd have a qualified independent tech or a MB dealer diagnose the source of the noise.

It sounds like its coming from the 3rd or 4th cylinder.

Thanks again!

Like a ticking noise (like an old watch)? Not sure what a plunger type of noise is. Trying to be helpful, just can't put a finger on what that noise would be. Is it possible to post a sound byte here?
