M116, T-chain slop and block ID?

First, where on the block is the number stamped so I know what the serial number of it is?

Next up, on my 380... pulled both valve covers and to my relief! upper guides are not broken (and nothing has jumped) but the chain has an awful lot of slop  Do these tensioners rely on oil pressure or the internal spring? Could I have a lower guide issue?

chain slop may be caused by stretch.line up the timing marks on the cams and see where the crankshaft is.anymore than 6-7% is undesireable.the tensioner in the 380 is spring and oil.the # is stamped at the bellhousing to the left of centre.

The engine number is awkward to get to. You have to lie on the air cleaner and peer down to a horizontal surface behind the driver side head.

Awesome, thanks a ton guys! :D

LOL, well it has a 5.0 in there.

M117.963 - 12 - 028009

Now the deciding factor, is this a Euro or US. It has true duals on it if that makes a difference, but could have been installed at a later date.

Weelll, the M117.963 was in '84 and '85 500SEL and 500SEC (s) My GUESS would be is that is not Euro. Euro or not, the timing chain should be the same. The timing chain, guides and tensioner I installed in my M117.962 Euro were all the same parts that fit the 500 SEL, so I was told. The tensioner on these is also spring and oil

hrm... I am out of town and can't cross check to see if the FD is the same. I know Euro have a different one.

Any chance you could pull your intake and jot down those digits or a digital pic?

Hit Man X 10-21-2006 01:00 AM

Okay, it has an Euro FD... I'm going to check the air flow meter now.

Check the cam part or casting numbers too.

We need someone to hack the EPC so we can see if engine numbers are listed against US VINs.

They listed on the front or rear of the camshaft?

Seems to me it'd be an awful lot of work to convert a US block to a Euro one...

sixto 10-21-2006 03:33 AM

I don't think the block was touched but it could be a US block using the manifolds that came with the car so the rest of the exhaust wouldn't have to be modified. I wouldn't trust something as easily replaced as exhaust manifolds to determine if it's a US or Euro engine... unless someone says Euro manifolds only work with Euro heads.

The manifolds are stamped M117, not M116. I had to do a double take on that. And the M117s have a taller deck height right? So the lower wouldn't fit.

Other weird stuff, there is some sensor not plugged in at the pass rear of the block...

david s poole 10-21-2006 01:52 PM

i used to own a 380 that i changed over to a 500.and i fitted dual manifolds to it[1 manifold for each two cylinders]ran like a scared jaguar.maybe you've found it.it was a euro engine.

Hit Man X 10-21-2006 07:33 PM

It's grey with a creme interior...

Hit Man X 10-27-2006 05:09 AM

Anyone have any scoop for me to help ID the block?
