Wiper problem on w210
 

Hi,

I own a 1997 E300D. Tonight, in a middle of a rain storm, my one and only wiper stopped doing its job of wipping its windshield.

I finally got home with no arms. When I turn the wiper on, I can hear the wiper motor running smoothly. The wiper itself does not move at all. In fact, I can move it myself from left to right. The wiper arm is free even if the wiper motor is turned off.

Any clue on what is causing this problem ? Should I order a new wiper transmission ? Please help on instruction to dismount this wiper

There are two reasons why your wiper may have stopped if the motor is still running, one of the nuts may have slackened on the drive linkage or the nylon gear in the drivehead is slipping/stripped. Either way the complete motor/drivehead unit has to come out to allow repair,in the first case it is just a matter of resyncronising the linkage and tightening the nut, the second is more complex.

Pretty sure it's the loose nut on the linkage that attaches to the motor, shown in the link on the previous post. I've seen this a few times before.

Now why would anyone want their wiper blade to park pointing straight up? Just to be different, I guess. Looks pretty silly to me, but then again, many things people do to cars look pretty silly to me.

I'm sure " Gilly " only posted that link, to explain how the assembly comes apart. ;)
Have you never watched the DTM ( Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft ), Germany's equal to NASCAR, only MUCH better racing.
They all run their cars with the wiper pointing straight up. ;)

Manny, I didn't post the link, I only referred to it. Didn't even notice it was a 201, and that the knot head was trying to get the wiper to park vertically, what a moron....then didn't even get it straight up.

It's OK, it's a good link, shows where the nut is that's loose anyways. The wiper linkages are all pretty similar, even on the newer 2 bladed ones.

I wasn't commenting on the pictorial instructions, which look to be pretty good. I was commenting on his (the website author, not the poster) reason for taking the unit out.

I'm just guessing, but I don't think it's legal for your blades to park within the field of view. But more to the point, it's about the silliest thing I've ever seen.

Why do they race with the blade parked up? To keep it from getting stuck with debris or something?

I posted the link ,and as far as I know the reason for parking the blade vertical is less wind resistance, in European saloon car racing many cars run with the blades vertical for this reason.Don't know about the legal situation.

You've been a great help for me.

The ball joint on the motor side assembly was disconnected due to a bad wear. The ball joint was rusty. I greased it, drill a 3/16" hole through the ball joint assembly and bolted it, so it will stay together.

While I got this thing in my hands, I greased the whole assembly and the wiper shaft as well. It is now running much more smoothly.

UPDATE: Just checked the Porsche website and it looks like they've moved the wiper park position to the right?!

Should've held onto my '95 Carrera...

Wonder if they've "screwed up" the ignition switch locale as well?:P

I don't consider parking on the left to be in the field of view. My 210 wiper parks on the left. So did the wipers on my prior car, a Saab 99. The ignition cylinder on that Saab was on the floor, behind the shifter. I also had a few old Fords with a left-side ignition cylinder, but all old Ford vans and pickups were that way.

Darn! I thought there might be a buyer for the 208/210 wiper mechanism I have in the garage. I got it to see if I could repair the stripped extension gear in the S420 (sold). Very different gear.
