And if I gave you a VIN, could you tell me who was the original owner? It's a one-owner AMG, but the books are gone. I could get a PMI on the service history, but I always prefer talking to the original owner.

The VMI only includes warranty repairs, recall/service campaigns, and warranty covered maintenance service. It won't give any information regarding customer pay work (brakes,tires, in-between oil changes, etc.). As far as finding out the name of the previous owner? That may not be as easy as it seems. The Privacy Act prohibits the distribution of clients' personal information. At the dealership I work, all customer service files are kept in a room with restricted access.

It'll be easier to wring that information out of the DMV.
