Trans slips between shifts
Car: 1991 300e 3.0 Automatic. 290k miles
Transmission has been replaced so I do not know the mileage for it. During the Summer the car shifted fine, but was kinda funky on the up shifts. Now that it has gotten cold the trans is acting up, as well as some other things. Summed up it slips between upshifts. When it actually hits the gear it is 100%. 4th to 2nd downshifts are still strong... It is worse when the car is cold. The dipstick was between the marks after about 20 miles of driving... I suppose it was warmed up by then. My tech friend, of many moons, said get the BG tranny conditioner to top it off, so I ordered some. Anyone have any insight on the automatic? If it has the be rebuilt, that is not a huge deal. Can it be built better? And if anyone has a five speed I will take it! Thanks in advance. Kyle |
Starting in 1990 MB auto transmissions were designed to delay the first shifts when the trans is COLD. That is for catalyst warm-up.
AS far as slipping goes try adjusting the modulator a turn or 2 clockwise. |

Ok, the modulator does not hold vacuum so I am replacing that. I did, however, turn it 1.5 times clockwise. It took care of the slip from 3rd to 4th... it still shifts weird....
Step two is replacing the modulator. Step three is BG trans conditioner. Step four is new fuild or rebuild... will worry about that later. |
