I have a 94 E420, I am up to $3000 on trying to find the problem:
Symptoms: Misses when idling. Getting worse. Idle up and down. Hessitates on hard acceleration. Takes for ever to start. Replaced: Harness. Plug wires. Coils. Dist caps. Crank sensor, and shimmed.... Fault Codes: On the red light the codes: 6, 10, 19, 21. appear. I put a timming light on the plug wires, coil wire and the two small wires on top of the coils, getting intermitent moments of no light, almost like no power to the coils for a second. Any one got all the fault codes for this vehicle? PLEASE Help....! |
If you got some matches, throw a few my way too
Mine (96 E320 with only 50k miles) just spent 4 days at the dealer, costing me $Can 400, without a diagnostic. Intermittent cranking but no start problem, sometimes no crank at all. They 2 million tests and startups cold and hot, and couldn't reproduce the problem, but it has happened enough times to me that I figured I should bring it in before I am stranded somewhere. Other than that, I am reasonably happy with it. |
It wouldn't have cost you $3 to take this car to a dealer and have the problem fixed.
Here's a note: It's NEVER the ignition system. |
actually
...the $3000 was spent at the dealer....last reply..."bring it back and we can look again"......I don't think so..!

Sounds like you may have more than one problem. In any case I would start by building the code reader and checking, erasing and rechecking the fault codes. The LED button checks only the DM codes. There are other PINs that you will want to check that require the code reader. On the codes lists I sent you a private message.

Just caps? Rotors too?

If it is not an ignition problem, it could be a mixture problem.
How about a manifold vacuum leak or a faulty air mass sensor? Or it could be a compression problem, possibly head gasket. Has compression been tested? |
Both
The dealer gave me the old rotors and caps.
What is strange is that if I put a timming light on the two small "supply" wires that connect to the coil (not the coil/distributor wire) I get an intermitent problem....at that same moment I get a mis / stumble in the motor. I am convinced it is a ignition problem...! The hard starting baffles me, I replaced the sensor and it made no difference. Thanks for all the replies. I just built a code reader....will advise. |

Code results
So, after a few tests this is what I get:
Pin 4 - code 1 Pin 6 - code 30 Pin 7 - codes 6, 14? (6=Cruise controll/idle speed controll.) Pin 8 - code 6 Pin 16 - code 1 pin 17 - code 6, but when I re-tested after switching off and having dinner it gave me a code 1. (6=Camshaft position sensor faulty) (it is brand new) Pin 19 - code 6, 10, 19 (6=Idle speed controll + 10=Voltage at airmass sensor too high + 19=injector open or short circuit or emission control system adaptation at limit. Pin 30 - code 4, 8 Now what? |
I'd erase them all, drive it some more and see what comes back. It's likely that some are old and won't come back at all.

This may help.
