Does my 1987 300E have a smog pump? If so when and if they start malfunctioning do they get extremely noisy almost to a knock. I'm hoping its not my engine. It doesn't seemed to coming from the water pump either. Any help would be appreciated.

Some did, some didn't. It depends..If you get under the hood you should see these items with pulleys.
1. power steering pump
2. belt tensioner idler pulley
3. A/C compressor pulley
4. alternator pulley
5. water pump pulley

If you have a sixth pulley, then it's an air pump. Yes air pumps can get noisy. If it's knocking, put your hand on the housing, you should be able to feel it.

Yes it has six

Looks like six to me and I noticed my 300TE has 6 also. Is it the one at the very top. I can not make out the part number. Where can I grab one of these at a decent price? I hope its only the pump. I need to figure out a way to test it.

KISS principle!!! Before you start guessing at parts I would, at least, use a mechanics stethascope and check each component. One you didn't list was the idler pully dampner; it looks like a little 6"-7" shock absorber between the engine block and the pulley.

I am with intruder! That little shock can go bad or get loose. It will make a metal to metal knock.

smog pump and pulley

My 500 SEL is in the shop today getting both a new air pump and pulley. They both were making noise (worn bearings?). Cost is $240 for pump, $35 for new pulley, plus 2.5 hrs labor. We will see the results tomorrow.

the results are in

Picked up my car last night.

Back to it's quiet old self
What a difference.

Labor was only 2.1 hours, and that included scoping the engine, which found some other problems.

But that's another discussion

The number of pulleys will not change at all. If you have an air pump it will be located on the passenger side of the engine above the alternator. There are 7 pulleys total.

Recounting in my head and there are 8 pulleys total; crank, AC, PS, tensioner, water pump, sheave, idler, alt.
The sheave pulley which, the clutch fan is attached to can go bad. The bearings wear out.
You can use a long screwdriver instead of a stethescope to pinpoint the noise too.

How do I remove the the Fan-Clutch Assembly? I have the correct hex socket but the the pully keeps moving (accckkk)! My bearings are completely shot and the pully is vibrating against the block. I found my knocking problem! I think.
