I have a 1991 300E 2.6 W124. It has a problem wherein the motor will rev then back-off, all by itself. This continues for a while then it behaves normally. After a while it starts misbehaving again. It can happen when the engine is cold or hot. Cruise-control really gets confused while it does this automatic accelerating, which makes the car drive jerky. I have taken the car to Worrells, who claim to be the most experienced MB dealer/maintenance in Melbourne (Australia) and they are stumped. They have had the car for a week and don't want to give it back until they can identify and fix the problem. Can anyone please help?

Max,
My wild guess is that your accelator
linkages need lubrication. my car did
the same thing last winter, and my mechanic
just told me to lubricate the linkages.I
use transmission fluid and Voila!everything
went back to normal.

I read just recently that (Consumer reports or some other BS), Mercedes (included the full line-up), I think of the late 80's, where they all had reports of taking off by themselves once put into gear (D or R). Is this true? If so, then it might be common, though I had never heard of it until whatever that was I was reading. I dunno!?

A Solution?

Worrell's said the problem was due to faulty spark-plugs. I have my doubts, but we shall see!
