When I come to a stop at the top of a steep hill, my 560SEL has a rather "bouncy" idle. The idle on flat or minor inclines is very smooth, it's only bad on steep hills. The tach doesn't jump or anything, what could be causing this problem? Is this something I should worry about? It is rare that I am stopped at such a steep hill, however I live near San Francisco...so it does come up once in a while. Any advice would be appreciated

If in fact the tach is not bouncing around in conjuction with the idle it sould be that you have worn engine mounts or rear trans mount. What you may be feeling is the engine vibration transfering through the frame. HTH

I could understand that possibility if the idle were always bouncy, but why would bad engine mounts only affect the car on a steep incline?
